It can be challenging to define what makes a hero, but a survey through our community will quickly prove that some individuals go above and beyond. Their actions and activism should in no way be overlooked, so here a few of those individuals that we define as heroes.
Gabrielle is the co-founder and CEO of Transformation Journeys Worldwide, an inclusion and training firm with a transgender focus.
How do you feel your work is making an impact on the LGBTQ+ community?
According to the 2015 US Trans Survey, over 25% of transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people have lost a job due to bias, and more than 75% have experienced some form of workplace discrimination. These rates are even higher for TGNC people of color. At Transformation Journeys Worldwide, we work to change these disparaging statistics. We do this by helping leading edge organizations initiate courageous conversations about TGNC people, overcome their lack of knowledge about how to interact respectfully, and engage in best practices that fuel fully inclusive environments. In short, we offer win-win solutions for employers and their TGNC employees.
Why do you think there is a need for the work you do in our community right now?
According to a 2017 Harris Poll, 12% of millennials currently identify as some form of trans or gender non-conforming. Meanwhile, it is estimated that just next year, millennials will make up as much as 50% of the workforce. This means organizations have to be intentional in attracting and retaining the best talent. These best talent applicants not only include TGNC millennials – but also their family members and friends who likewise want to work in trans-affirming spaces. This is why our cutting-edge transgender inclusion training and consulting is so critical right now – because more TGNC people are seeking affirming workplaces, and companies are competing to be employers of choice for all highly qualified candidates.

My greatest joy is hearing stories of TGNC individuals being able to show up in the workplace as their authentic selves as a result of our clients taking what they have learned from us and creating an inclusive workplace culture for everyone.
