Peach Recommends The Full Range of a Musical Icon

Musicologist Quentin Harrison releases his third book – ‘Record Redux: Donna Summer’ – honoring the discography of the musical trailblazer that was Donna Summer.

This December, music historian and commentator Quentin Harrison will release Record Redux: Donna Summer, the first book of its kind devoted to the study and review of Summer’s complete body of work. Contrary to most conversations, Harrison looks beyond the 1970s disco mold that has been typically ascribed to Summer and explores her broader canon, which includes 19 albums and more than 80 commercial and promotional singles globally. The aim is to re-contextualize and reintroduce Donna Summer in a deeper way to fans and critics alike.

Harrison examines Summer’s full catalog in detail, starting in the late 1960s with her role in the West German production of Hair, and culminating with her last long player release in 2008, Crayons. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, Donna Summer’s legacy boasts 18 Grammy nominations and five wins — including the notable distinction of being the first person of color and the first woman to win Best Rock Vocal Performance (Female), in 1980 for her single “Hot Stuff.” Summer’s career reveals a creative trajectory that established her as an influential leading act in dance and pop music, helping chart the musical map for artists like Madonna and Kylie Minogue to explore in their own careers.

The installment is the third in Harrison’s Record Redux series and follows the release of Record Redux: Carly Simon and the inaugural series release Record Redux: Spice Girls.
