AS THE pop culture-addicted creator of the celeb-skewering blog DoodleWhore.com, Jason O’Malley is also the artist behind Handsome Devil Press, a sexy alternative greeting card company he runs with partner J.R. Craigmile.
On Doodle Whore, O'Malley has made his site a regular stop for those who love other gay-ass celeb gossip sites. Take Perez Hilton's or Towerloads words, put them in comic form, and that's an idea of Doodle Whore. O'Malley comments on such tragedies as Britney's hair-don'ts, Lindsay's street stumbles and Paris' fauz pas.
And the new Doodle Whore e-cards on the site let you share the laughter and the love.
Now O’Malley brings his Handsome Devil greeting cards to directly target our love of men — and his. We decided to sit down with this ever-growing entrepreneur to find out just exactly why he’s so drawn to dogs, dudes and drama queens.
David: On your Handsome Devil site, you describe yourself and your clients as MoBos—or modern bohemians. What’s that mean?
DOODLE WHORE: A MoBo is anyone who has an open mind, good taste and digs our cards and art.
Our fans run the gamut from gay to straight and everything in between. You’d be surprised how many people don’t see the gay subtext in a lot of our cards, and that’s okay.
How do you find inspiration for the manly characters on your greeting cards?
I use a lot of vintage sources as inspiration: old physique magazines, porn, sports imagery, etc. Classic male archetypes obviously float my boat: soldiers, rugby players, sailors, wrestlers, mechanics. But if you dig around, you’ll also find twinks, cubs, trannies, lesbians and even babies in our line. We don’t discriminate.
The underlying theme behind our “Guys” collection is male bonding and brotherhood with a dollop of sexual tension.
What inspired your canine-friendly Woof! collection?
I’ve always incorporated pooches into my work. We’re always inspired by our two in-house mascots: Tino, a Miniature Pinscher, and Simon, a Rhodesian Ridgeback.
What are your best sellers—the more cartoon skin the better?
We don’t do full-on porn cards since there are plenty of those already on the market, but sexy does sell. I like taking something nonsexual, like a rugby scrum or car repair, and infusing it with hotness.
Why did you create doodlewhore.com?
I started Doodle Whore with a simple premise: popular culture, doodled.
I was obsessed with Britney, much to my boyfriend’s dismay. Instead of forcing him to listen to my endless analysis of her mental state, I decided to doodle it and put it online to reach a wider audience. My other guilty pleasure is "The Hills," and now "Gossip Girl."
It’s a sickness, really.
